Shanduka Foundation
Shanduka Foundation was established to embark on a proactive journey that would play a significant role in the upliftment of areas crucial to the development of South Africa and the economy as a whole. These areas primarily encompass education- our culture of learning- and small business and entrepreneurial development – our culture of earning.
The Foundation was formally launched in November 2004 as the vehicle for Shanduka Group’s philanthropic and social investment initiatives, with the Group committing to invest R100 million on social investments over a period of 10 years.
The objectives of the Foundation are to:
-
Advance Shanduka Group’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiatives.
-
Support projects aimed at improving South Africa’s most disadvantaged schools.
-
Sponsor and mentor historically disadvantaged students through study at tertiary institutions.
-
Support SMME’s through initiatives aimed at developing business skills and ensuring their sustainability.
The Foundation is managed by an independent Board of Trustees and is currently focused on the following initiatives:

Shanduka Black Umbrellas
Shanduka believes that the development of business skills is one of the most important aspects of ensuring the economic empowerment of previously disadvantaged people in South Africa. To that effect, Shanduka partnered with Black Umbrellas, an initiatiative conceptualised by entrepreneurs to provide support to emerging enterprises.
Shanduka Black Umbrellas was a project first conceived as Black Umbrellas by Cape Town social entrepreneurs Charles Maisel and Mark Frankel and proved to be highly effective in supporting SMMEs. The model has now been adopted by the Shanduka Foundation with the intention of expanding the project countrywide. Shanduka Black Umbrellas is supported through The Mabindu Trust.
